Love to learn, love to teach

24th June 2015

I’ll never cease to be inspired by the generosity of people posting ‘how to’ guides online. I’ve saved hundreds of pounds in computer training following online tutorial videos, (which thankfully are also available at 2am when you’re chasing that deadline).

And there’s so much that you can learn in this way.

So far I’ve mended my 24 year old tumble dryer for only £15 spent on spare parts, learnt how to top up the clutch fluid on the most ridiculously designed Rover engine solving a chronic problem, replaced the broken screen on my chromebook, volunteered to mend my daughter’s ipod (although she didn’t trust me to do it), found some delicious new recipies - now staple favourite family meals. Just the other day, I came across the information I’ve been looking for on-and-off for ages, supplied by a Transition Town member in Lewes, explaining how to go about creating and installing magnetic secondary glazing. Perfect for my Edwardian house.

The idea for Climates grew out of this experience. My online learning has shown me how kind, generous and warm hearted people are, how willing to share their knowledge and skills with people they’ve never met. It seems that we not only love to learn, we love to teach.  So, it emerged… what if we brought people together around the issue of climate change? What if we make it easy for people to ask and share? What if we remove the barriers of ‘where do I find out about…?’ and put it all in one warm, welcoming and friendly place?

Research shows that people are worried about climate change and want to do more. In an online social network, Climates aims to make that easy.

We may be shy to ask, but Climates makes it OK. That’s why we join, to ask our ‘mates’ for help and to offer help when we can. Climates catalyses action on climate change enabling people to ask, respond, share, collaborate, motivate and inspire their ‘mates’ to greater action.

Now I know how to budget for this autumn’s DIY project, I’m looking forward to learning more about installing secondary glazing and keeping my ‘mates’ updated with the project as it progresses. No doubt I’ll be looking for more hints and tips along the way. I’ll let you know how I get on…

How about you? Have you, like me, got any projects which have been put on the long finger? What help do you need from your ‘mates’ to kick start you into action?

How could Climates help you do more to tackle climate change?
